A bit of history
The city courted the U.S. Navy in the early 1900s, and Naval Base San Diego opened in 1922, planting the military and engineering roots the region still runs on. UC San Diego professor Irwin Jacobs founded Linkabit in 1968 and later Qualcomm in 1985, inventing wireless technology at the heart of 3G and 4G. A few miles away, fellow UCSD professor Ivor Royston launched Hybritech in 1978, the region's first biotech company. San Diego is now one of the world's top biotech clusters.
