Solana Beach
A bit of history
The area, once known as Lockwood Mesa, was first settled by the George H. Jones family in 1886, and developer Colonel Ed Fletcher purchased roughly 140 acres from Jones in 1922 to build out the townsite, opening Fletcher Cove beach in 1925. Solana Beach incorporated as its own city on July 1, 1986. Its oldest neighborhood, La Colonia de Eden Gardens, was built around 1919-1920 for Mexican farmworkers who tended the citrus groves of nearby Rancho Santa Fe. In 2003, Solana Beach became the first city in the continental United States to ban smoking on its public beaches, a policy other California coastal cities later adopted.
