A bit of history
Donald Douglas founded the Douglas Company in Santa Monica on July 22, 1921, and the aircraft maker grew into one of the city's largest employers for decades before consolidating operations elsewhere. That aerospace-and-manufacturing base gave way to a different kind of builder starting in the 1980s and 90s, as digital media startups moved into converted warehouses and lofts along the coast. By the early 2010s the stretch from Santa Monica through Venice and Playa Vista had earned its own name: Silicon Beach.
