Speculators Frank T. Botsford and George W. Heald began developing La Jolla as a seaside resort during the real estate boom of the 1880s, and a rail line and hotel by 1894 drew early vacationers. Philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps arrived in 1896 and became the neighborhood's principal developer, commissioning landmark buildings and helping fund the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, founded in 1903, which later anchored the creation of UC San Diego. That research base has since grown into a cluster of institutions including the Salk Institute, Scripps Research, and the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, making La Jolla one of the region's leading biotech and research centers.
