Huntington Beach
A bit of history
The area was first subdivided in 1901 as Pacific City, then renamed for railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington in 1903 to help promote it as a seaside resort, with the landmark pier following in 1904 and city incorporation in 1909. Before oil, the local economy ran on agriculture, particularly celery and sugar beets, which for a time earned it the nickname Celery Capital. The 1920 discovery of oil beneath the town spurred rapid growth and became a defining industry for decades. Its surfing identity dates to the pier's opening, when Hawaiian surfing pioneer George Freeth demonstrated the sport there, a legacy that eventually earned the city the trademarked name Surf City USA.
