West Hollywood
A bit of history
For decades, the land now called West Hollywood remained unincorporated under Los Angeles County, without its own police force, which let nightclubs, hotels, and restaurants flourish along the Sunset Strip and helped make it a center of the 1960s rock and roll scene. By the early 1980s, a coalition of gay residents, Russian Jewish immigrants, and elderly renters organized around the looming expiration of the county's rent-control protections and pushed for self-governance. Voters incorporated West Hollywood as its own city on November 29, 1984, and its first city council took office with an openly gay majority, among the first in the country.
