A bit of history
Tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney founded Venice of America on July 4, 1905, dredging marshland along the coast south of Santa Monica into a network of canals modeled on Venice, Italy, complete with gondolas, a pier, and an amusement zone. The town operated as its own city before Los Angeles annexed it in 1926, largely so the growing metropolis would have a beach within its limits. Many of the original canals were later filled in, but the surviving waterways and the beachfront boardwalk carried Kinney's resort into its next identity as the bohemian, art-and-fitness-driven Venice Beach neighborhood known today.
