Thousand Oaks
A bit of history
The Thousand Oaks area was ranching and agricultural land for decades before residents voted in September 1964 to adopt the name "Thousand Oaks," inspired by the tens of thousands of oak trees across the valley; the city incorporated on October 7, 1964. Its economy diversified through the mid-20th century with movie-industry tenants like the Jungleland USA animal park and technology firms such as Packard Bell moving into the Newbury Park industrial area. The turning point came in 1980, when a group of scientists founded Amgen in the city; it grew into the world's largest independent biotechnology company and Thousand Oaks' largest employer. Amgen's continued expansion keeps biotech at the center of the city's identity today.
