Studio City

A bit of history

Studio City takes its name from the roughly 60-acre film lot that comedy producer Mack Sennett built in the area starting in 1927, one of the first major studios established in the San Fernando Valley. The Depression forced Sennett into bankruptcy around 1933, and the lot passed through independent ownership and Republic Pictures before CBS became its primary tenant in 1963 and purchased it outright in 1967, renaming it CBS Studio Center. Decades of network television, including Gunsmoke and Gilligan's Island, were filmed there, cementing the neighborhood's identity as a production hub. The lot, now called Radford Studio Center, still anchors Studio City's economy today.
