Santa Ana
A bit of history
William H. Spurgeon founded Santa Ana in 1869 on land purchased from the old Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, and the city incorporated on June 1, 1886, becoming Orange County's seat in 1889. Its early economy centered on agriculture, particularly citrus and walnuts, before aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin founded his aircraft company in Santa Ana in 1912, a firm that later became part of Lockheed Martin. During World War II the Santa Ana Army Air Base trained thousands of aviators, and defense manufacturing joined agriculture as a pillar of the local economy through the postwar boom. Today Santa Ana remains Orange County's government seat and one of its most populous cities.
