TRW founders Simon Ramo and Dean Wooldridge established Space Park in Redondo Beach starting in 1961, and the campus became the company's headquarters when Thompson Ramo Wooldridge Inc. officially became TRW Inc. in 1965. At the height of the Cold War, 15 of the 25 largest U.S. aerospace companies were based in Southern California, and Space Park's engineers designed and built more than 100 satellites, spacecraft, and instruments there. Northrop Grumman acquired TRW in 2002 and still operates the site, which has been designated a historic aerospace facility for work including components of the James Webb Space Telescope. Aerospace and satellite engineering remain central to Redondo Beach's economy today.
