A bit of history

Marina del Rey was once salt marsh and wetland used by the Tongva people, and later the site of a failed 1880s attempt to build a commercial harbor. Howard Hughes brought industry to the area in 1940, relocating his aircraft operations to the adjacent Ballona wetlands, where he built a nearly two-mile runway and later the Spruce Goose. Congress authorized a small-craft harbor for the site in 1954, and after construction weathered a major storm in the early 1960s, the marina was formally dedicated on April 10, 1965. It remains an unincorporated Los Angeles County community and today holds roughly 5,000 boat slips, making it the largest man-made small-craft harbor in North America.
