
Developer Stewart Merrill subdivided the coastal dunes and named the community after his home borough of Manhattan in New York; the city was officially incorporated on December 7, 1912. After World War II, Manhattan Beach's proximity to Southern California's booming aerospace industry drew engineers to the area, and in 1968 TRW expanded its sprawling Space Park engineering campus into the city. That complex, now operated by Northrop Grumman, remains one of the South Bay's largest employers. The influx of aerospace professionals helped transform Manhattan Beach from a seasonal resort town into a permanent, affluent residential community.
