Long Beach
A bit of history
The settlement of Willmore City was renamed Long Beach and incorporated in 1888, briefly disincorporated in 1897 over disputes about prohibition ordinances, then reincorporated later that same year. The city's port opened in 1911, and the discovery of oil at nearby Signal Hill in 1921 fueled a construction boom. Douglas Aircraft opened a plant in Long Beach in 1941 that built military aircraft through World War II and later commercial jets, and Douglas's 1967 merger into McDonnell Douglas kept aerospace manufacturing central to the local economy for decades. That legacy carries into today's Long Beach, where newer space companies have set up alongside the old aircraft plants.
