A bit of history

Developers A.L. Burbank and Eugene Baker purchased roughly 1,500 acres of undeveloped beachfront in 1900, and Hermosa Beach incorporated as a sixth-class city on January 14, 1907, the nineteenth municipality formed in Los Angeles County. The city built its identity around its two-mile stretch of oceanfront, which its founders set aside in perpetuity as a public beach rather than commercial waterfront. In the 1920s Hermosa became a center of the West Coast silk industry, and later in the century it turned into a cultural hub: the Lighthouse Cafe helped define West Coast jazz, and the AVP Hermosa Beach Open, launched in 1969, cemented the city's status as a home of beach volleyball.
