Glendale was platted in 1887 and incorporated as a city on February 15, 1906. In 1923 the city opened what became Grand Central Air Terminal, which by the late 1920s and 1930s was Southern California's leading commercial airport — the site of Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes flights and the departure point for Charles Lindbergh's first transcontinental passenger flight. The airport closed in 1959 as jet aircraft outgrew its runway, and in 1961 Walt Disney purchased part of the property to build WED Enterprises, the studio that became Walt Disney Imagineering. Glendale's aviation-era infrastructure and skilled workforce helped seed the entertainment and media companies that anchor its economy today.
