Encino
A bit of history
The Tongva village of Siutcanga once stood in what is now Encino, and in 1769 the Portolà expedition camped nearby while a Spanish missionary named the valley for its holm oaks, or "encinas." In 1845, Mexican governor Pío Pico granted Rancho Los Encinos, land from the secularized Mission San Fernando, to three Mission Indians; the adobe ranch house that followed still stands as Los Encinos State Historic Park. Sitting on a key travel route between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, the rancho changed hands among Californio, French, and Basque families over the following decades. Encino was subdivided for residential development in the 1920s and grew into one of the San Fernando Valley's wealthiest neighborhoods.
