Del Mar
A bit of history
Del Mar was first settled in 1885 when railroad official Theodore Loop and Colonel Jacob Taylor built a seaside resort along the rail line, though the city itself was not incorporated until July 15, 1959. Its defining institution arrived in 1936, when Bing Crosby and a group of Hollywood partners, including Pat O'Brien, Jimmy Durante, and Oliver Hardy, formed the Del Mar Turf Club and opened the Del Mar Racetrack in 1937, with Crosby personally greeting the first fan through the gates. Crosby's recording of "Where the Turf Meets the Surf" became the track's lasting slogan, and the adjacent Del Mar Fairgrounds has hosted the San Diego County Fair since 1936. Del Mar remains defined by that seasonal horse-racing and fairgrounds economy rather than any major industrial history.
