
Harry Culver founded the city in 1913 and incorporated it on September 20, 1917, promoting it with the slogan "All roads lead to Culver City." Producer Thomas Ince built a studio there in 1915 that became the Triangle Motion Picture Company lot, and Samuel Goldwyn's later purchase of the site led to the founding of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1924; Hal Roach Studios operated nearby from 1919 to 1963. The MGM lot became Sony Pictures Studios in 1991 and remains in production today, alongside newer arts, culture, and technology tenants in the city.
