Costa Mesa
A bit of history
The community began as Harper, a stop on the Santa Ana and Newport Railway named for a local rancher, before residents voted in 1920 to rename it Costa Mesa, Spanish for "coastal tableland." The city incorporated on June 29, 1953, and grew from a semi-rural farming community into a retail and commerce hub anchored by South Coast Plaza, which opened in 1967 and became the highest-grossing shopping center in the country. Costa Mesa became known as a center of the action-sports industry, home to the headquarters of Vans, Hurley, and Volcom, alongside credit-reporting giant Experian's North American headquarters.
