A bit of history
A group of investors led by Burton E. Green bought the old Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas hoping to strike oil, and when the wells came up dry they reorganized as the Rodeo Land and Water Company in 1906 and subdivided the land for housing instead. Landscape architect Wilbur D. Cook laid out the city's wide, curving, tree-lined streets in 1907, and the Beverly Hills Hotel opened in 1912 to draw affluent buyers to the new development. The city incorporated on January 28, 1914, and grew alongside the neighboring film industry, becoming home to major studios and talent agencies. Rodeo Drive is now one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world.
