Anaheim was founded in 1857 by fifty German immigrant families who bought land along the Santa Ana River to grow grapes, and for about 25 years the settlement was California's largest wine producer before a vine disease destroyed the industry in the 1880s. The city incorporated on March 18, 1876, and its economy shifted to walnuts, lemons, and oranges. In 1954, Walt Disney chose a 160-acre orange and walnut grove in Anaheim for his new theme park, and Disneyland opened to the public on July 17, 1955. The park set off a tourism boom that reshaped Anaheim's economy; Disneyland Resort now contributes an estimated $4.7 billion annually to the Southern California economy.
