A bit of history
Isaac Newton Van Nuys once owned roughly 47,000 acres of the southern San Fernando Valley before selling the land in 1909 to a company that began developing it into a planned neighborhood the following year. Van Nuys Airport was founded as Metropolitan Airport on December 17, 1928 — the 25th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight — and the Navy used it during World War II before the city bought it back for civilian use in 1949. General Motors opened an assembly plant here in 1947 that built Chevrolet trucks, Corvairs, Camaros, and Firebirds until it closed in 1992 and was razed the following year.
