A bit of history

Columbus Tustin, a carriage maker, founded the town in 1868 on land purchased from the old Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, laying out streets and giving away lots to encourage settlement. The city incorporated in 1927. During World War II, the Navy leased nearby land to build Santa Ana Naval Air Station (Lighter-Than-Air), completed in 1942 with two enormous wooden hangars built to shelter blimp squadrons patrolling for enemy submarines. The base was later transferred to the Marine Corps and renamed Marine Corps Air Station Tustin; its two hangars, among the largest wooden structures ever built, still stand as local landmarks.
