A bit of history

The town was known as Bay City through the early 20th century, but had to pick a new name when it incorporated on October 27, 1915, since a Bay City already existed in Northern California — it became Seal Beach instead. Nearly three decades later, in 1944, the Navy opened the Seal Beach Naval Ammunition and Net Depot here during World War II, drawn by open land for weapons storage and proximity to fleet concentrations in Long Beach and San Diego. The base, now Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, still operates today.
