A bit of history
Tiburcio Tapia built what's now recognized as California's oldest commercial winery here starting in 1839, shortly after Mexican governor Juan B. Alvarado granted him Rancho Cucamonga that same year. Hugh Thomas bought the property in 1920 and turned it into Thomas Winery, a successful Route 66 stop after Prohibition ended; it's now California Historic Landmark #490. The modern city didn't exist until November 1977, when the unincorporated communities of Alta Loma, Cucamonga, and Etiwanda voted to merge into a single city and kicked off the growth that's made it home to more than 175,000 people today.
