A bit of history

Sugar industrialists Henry, James, Robert, and Benjamin Oxnard built a sugar beet processing factory here in 1898 after securing a pledge of 18,000 acres of sugar beets from local farmers, on land then known as Rancho Colonia. Henry T. Oxnard reportedly wanted to name the new town after the Greek word for sugar, but gave up wrestling with state bureaucrats and named it after his own family instead. The city incorporated in 1903, and the factory's success drew Chinese, Japanese, and Mexican workers who diversified the surrounding agricultural economy.
