A bit of history
Spanish sheep rancher Juan Murrieta bought 52,000 acres in the valley in 1873, and the Temecula Land and Water Company founded a settlement in his honor in 1884 after purchasing part of his land. The California Southern Railroad had already laid tracks through in 1882, and a train depot built in 1885 became the nucleus of a town that reached 800 people by 1890. Murrieta stayed a small rural community for another century before incorporating as a city on July 1, 1991, by which point its population had already grown past 24,000.
