A bit of history

The area was known as El Toro ("the bull" in Spanish) going back to 1863, tracing further to 1847 when José Serrano's family settled the 11,000-acre Rancho Cañada de los Alisos granted to them by the Mexican government. When the community incorporated as a city on December 20, 1991, residents voted to rename it Lake Forest after a 1960s housing tract rather than keep the El Toro name — a decision long-time residents saw as erasing the town's ranching history in favor of a name borrowed from man-made lakes.
