A bit of history

Hollywood began as a real-estate subdivision registered by Harvey Wilcox with the Los Angeles County recorder on February 1, 1887, named by his wife Daeida. It was annexed by the City of Los Angeles in 1910. Film companies began relocating there from the East Coast in the early 1910s, partly to escape patent-infringement lawsuits from Thomas Edison's Motion Picture Patents Company and partly for the region's reliable weather and varied scenery. By 1912 major studios had set up production in and around Hollywood, and within a decade the name had become synonymous with the American film industry.
