Hawthorne
A bit of history
Hawthorne incorporated on July 12, 1922, named after author Nathaniel Hawthorne at the suggestion of a co-founder's daughter who admired his work. Aircraft designer Jack Northrop opened a factory and headquarters here in 1939, setting the city's industrial direction for decades. That same aerospace real estate has outlived Northrop's own tenancy: when Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, the company eventually moved into a former Northrop Corporation plant in Hawthorne in 2007, a complex that's since grown past a million square feet.
