A bit of history

Alonzo Cook founded Garden Grove in 1874 on land that had been part of Rancho Los Nietos, a Spanish land grant, and it grew slowly as a farming community until a rail link arrived in the early 1900s drew more settlers to grow citrus and walnuts. The city incorporated in 1956 with a population of around 44,000, and the postwar boom turned the farm town into a suburb. Its best-known landmark, the glass-paneled Crystal Cathedral, was built in 1980 for television evangelist Robert H. Schuller and has served as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange since 2019.
