A bit of history

Claremont grew up around Pomona College, founded in 1887 and relocated to the town's vacant Hotel Claremont building in 1890. Under President James A. Blaisdell's "Group Plan," Pomona became the seed for a consortium of independent colleges sharing a campus, with Scripps College added in 1926, Claremont McKenna in 1946, Harvey Mudd in 1955, and Pitzer in 1963. That cluster, now known as the Claremont Colleges, shaped the city's identity as a small, tree-lined academic town rather than an industrial or commercial center.
