A bit of history
Norwegian immigrant Carl Iverson and his wife Augusta homesteaded 160 rocky acres in the Simi Hills here starting around 1884, land that grew to about 500 acres over the following decades. The Iversons began allowing film crews onto the property as early as 1912, and its rocky, varied terrain went on to double for the Wild West, Africa, Asia, and alien planets in an estimated 3,500 or more movies and TV episodes at its peak. Construction of the Simi Valley Freeway in the late 1960s cut the ranch in half and ended its run as a viable filming location, but Chatsworth's outsized footprint on Hollywood's back-lot era is well documented.
