Which Southern California city actually raises the most startup funding?
The averages get skewed hard by a handful of massive hard-tech and defense rounds — here's what the real numbers show.
San Diego leads Southern California in total startup funding by a wide margin: $6.69 billion raised across 188 funded companies in our directory, more than any other city in the region. Los Angeles has more funded companies overall (258), but a lower average round size, spreading its $3.26 billion total across a much broader base of software, media, and consumer startups.
The real surprise is further south, in the South Bay. El Segundo and Torrance are small cities by company count, 43 and 9 funded companies respectively, but rank second and fourth in the region by total dollars raised, at $4.33 billion and $2.48 billion. The average round size in both cities is enormous: over $100 million in El Segundo, over $275 million in Torrance.
That is not because the typical startup in these cities is unusually well-funded. It is because a handful of massive hard-tech and defense manufacturing rounds happen to be headquartered there. Torrance's total is almost entirely two companies: Hadrian ($1.37 billion) and Castelion ($1 billion). El Segundo's is led by Valar Atomics ($1 billion), Impulse Space ($833 million), and Radiant Industries ($435 million). Take those five rounds out and both cities' numbers look completely different.
The practical takeaway, if you are benchmarking your own raise against "what's normal in SoCal": location matters less than industry. A hardware or defense-tech company in the South Bay corridor is playing a different funding game than a software company in Santa Monica or Irvine, and comparing your seed round to a regional average dominated by billion-dollar aerospace rounds will give you the wrong read.
